Language Competency Requirements 

Applicants applying to the SPTRB for teacher certification must demonstrate competency in English or French. Acceptable demonstration includes:

 
1. Post-Secondary Education

    A. Completion of a teacher education program in English or French
     
      Completion of a teacher education program from the following countries meets language competency requirements:

English:
        •  Canada  Cameroon    St. Vincent 
  Anguilla    Dominica Seychelles 
  Antigua and Barbuda        Ghana Sierra Leone 
  Australia    Grenada Trinidad and Tobago 
  Bahamas    Guyana Turks and Caicos Islands

              B.  If the teacher education program was not completed in a country listed in A above, but was completed entirely in English or French, language competency may be demonstrated via a Verification Letter sent directly to the SPTRB from the Faculty/College of Education for the studies completed within the teacher education program. The Verification Letter must confirm language and length of instruction of the entire teacher education program.
     
 
  C.  Post-secondary education other than a teacher education program completed in English or French. This may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Minimum requirements for this consideration is completion of the equivalent of 18 credit hours of coursework that includes at least the equivalent of 9 credit hours of course work that relies heavily upon usage of French or English language skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening such as courses in education, social sciences, or arts/humanities.  

     

2. Teacher Certification in another Canadian Jurisdiction, and at the time of certification being assessed for language competency/proficiency and met that jurisdiction's language competency requirements. This currently includes (but is subject to change) Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec. 


3. Successful completion of one of these programs:
    •  Internationally Educated Teachers Certificate (IETC) - University of Saskatchewan
    •  Certificate for Internationally Trained Educators (CITE) - University of Regina
    •  Certificat Voie d'avenir pour enseigner en Saskatchewan (élémentaire / secondaire) - University of Regina


4. Obtaining a minimum score on a Language Proficiency/Competency Test. Minimum scores on acceptable tests include (scores remain unchanged from existing policy):

Please Note:     Results above must be achieved on a single exam (i.e. a combination of multiple exams is not accepted). 
     Results must be sent directly from the testing organization. 
     The most recent results are considered valid.
